GreenNanoBone:

GreenNanoBone: Inspiring the Next Generation of Female Researchers

To mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026, researchers from the Dental Department at Aarhus University welcomed children for a day dedicated to curiosity, learning, and hands-on discovery. The initiative aimed not only to communicate science and ongoing research in an accessible and engaging way, but also to inspire children - especially girls - to imagine themselves as future researchers.

The day began with an interactive educational presentation introducing the children to the close connection between oral health and overall health. Through simple explanations and dialogue, they learned how blood transports oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, and how fruits and vegetables can play an important role in healing processes and maintaining health.

From there, science became something tangible. To introduce the concept of hydrogels, the children created hydrogel out of slime themselves, turning a complex scientific topic into a playful and memorable experience. This hands-on activity helped illustrate how materials used in research can translate into real-world medical and dental applications.

The children were then invited to step into the role of clinicians and researchers. Using 3D models of the jaw, they performed mock “surgeries,” gaining insight into dental procedures and research in a safe and engaging way. As the event took place within the dentistry department, the children also had the opportunity to sit in a real dental chair and examine each other’s teeth, transforming a clinical environment into a space of exploration rather than fear.

To conclude the day, participants took part in a hand hygiene exercise using UV light, visually demonstrating how germs spread and why proper hygiene matters. This activity emphasised personal responsibility, as well as the importance of protecting the health of others.

A key aspect of the event was representation: all researchers involved were women. By engaging with children in this setting, the initiative highlighted the important role women play in science and healthcare, and aimed to inspire the next generation to see science as inclusive and accessible to everyone.

By combining education, play, and real research environments, our GreennanoBone researchers contributed to the celebration of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2026, fostering curiosity, confidence, and inspiration in young learners.
